Pittsburgh Fertility: 7 Natural Steps to Increase Your Chances of Conception

I know that in the world of ticking biological clocks, saying the best thing to do to increase fertility is to slow down can seem like a cruel joke. The truth is though that focusing on being healthy before focusing on being pregnant is not only wise, it often is the very thing that allows for conception to occur. You want your baby to develop in a nourishing atmosphere, so the more well, balanced and happy you are the better! Here are seven things that can help with fertility.

  1. Chart your cycle. If you haven’t done this before, you will learn a lot! A good place to start is with the book, Taking Charge of Your Fertility, by Toni Weschler. It’s fun to read and chock-full of information. You’ll learn how to track your fertility signs like basal body temperature, cervical mucus and cervical position so you’ll know when optimal times for conception are, as well as see any imbalances in your cycle.
  2. Clean up your diet. Specific recommendations vary from person to person, but a few things will be relevant to all including an organic, whole-foods diet with lots of fresh fruits and vegetables and cutting out refined sugars, caffeine, alcohol and processed foods. Some women will do well with whole-fat dairy products, while others would do best avoiding dairy. Some will need more red meat. A good acupuncturist can help you to make food and supplement choices to support your constitution and specific needs.
  3. Walk. Find the time to go for a 30-minute walk every day. It’s so important to keep things moving. We often put off exercise thinking we’ll create some grand plan for fitness sometime in the future. Start now and start simple. Park your car in the furthest spot at the shopping center. Take the stairs whenever you can. Just get moving.
  4. Start a cultivational exercise. This could be yoga, qi gong, tai chi – any form of movement that’s designed to increase energy flow in the body.
  5. Learn to meditate. This is such an important life skill – the ability to tap into a place that’s deeper than our thinking mind’s constant worries and plans. If you’d like to know more about how to start, you may want to check out my Thursday night meditation and acupuncture offering.
  6. Sleep. Plan your evenings so that you can be in bed asleep by 11pm. The 8-hour cycle that begins then is the most beneficial for the body in terms of restoration and hormone activity.
